FIS Tea::November 8::Lisa Heggum

Dean's Tea, November 8, 4-5pm
Claude Bissell Building, room 728

YPFIS is very proud to present an informal talk by Lisa Heggum at the
Dean's Tea on Wednesday, November 8th, Room 728 at 4pm. Lisa will
speak about her work with collection development and web content
creation and her experiences working in New York, as a book editor,
and as a pioneering/award winning youth librarian.

Lisa Heggum is the Youth Collections Librarian for the Toronto Public
Library at its flagship Yonge St. Reference branch. Lisa Heggum's
leadership has touched youth in Pickering, Toronto and indirectly
through librarians across Ontario, Canada and the States.

As a former Youth Services Specialist at Maria A. Shchuka branch of
the TPL, she launched youth participation into TPL's Strategic
Planning Process with a Youth Forum. She has instituted a successful
Youth Advisory Group, obtained a 12-month commitment from a local arts
group to host an "Open Mic" series and collaborated with another arts
agency to host a four-part Black History Month program.

Lisa came to TPL from Pickering Public Library, where she was involved
in an extensive revamping of the way in which the library served
teens. She worked with TPL's Webmaster and Teen Advisory Group to
create one of the top five library Web sites for teens in North
America (as selected by teenagers through the ALA in 2002). She began
her career in New York City, working first as a YA librarian and then
as an outreach librarian providing services in correctional
facilities. Lisa is a certified YALSA "Serving the Underserved" trainer.

Lisa freely shares her ideas and insights with her colleagues, sitting
on various youth-related committees at TPL and presenting "Teens Are
Patrons Too" at numerous library conferences, including OLA, CLA and
ALA. She serves on the CLA Young Adult Canadian Book Award and the OLA
Red Maple Award committees; and she chairs the planning committee for
OLA's Teen Services Conference: BIG IDEAS, NOW.

Lisa is a passionate about reaching teen readers and is a committed
librarian who reaches youth locally, provincially and nationally
through her integrity and commitment. "She is phenomenal!" exclaimed
one colleague commenting on her contribution.

In 2004, Lisa Heggum was the first recipient of OPLA's new Leadership
in Youth Services Award. In 2006, All Sleek and Skimming was released.
All Sleek is an anthology of major Canadian teen fiction and is edited by Lisa.

"Libraries need to employ more teen service specialists, and teens
themselves should be involved in every aspect of young adult library
service planning, through both volounteer and paid positions. From
collection development to programming to virtual and physical design,
including teens in the planning not only ensures that libraries are
relevant to teens' lives, but it empowers teens, providing them with
valuable experience and contributing to their healthy development."
